UPDATE @ 4 p.m. June 13

A Dayton man has been indicted by a Montgomery County grand jury on several felony charges in a fatal shooting on Norris Drive on June 16.

Michael Felton, 24, shot John Turner Jr. in the parking lot of an apartment complex during an altercation over a mutual female acquaintance, Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr.’s office said in a prepared statement. Turner, 44, died at the scene. Both men are from Dayton.

Felton is formally charged on the following single counts:

  • Murder as a result of felonious assault with a deadly weapon
  • Murder as a result of felonious assault causing serious physical harm
  • Felonious assault with a deadly weapon
  • Felonious assault causing serious physical harm
  • Tampering with evidence
  • Weapon possession as a felon

Each murder count carries a specification that would add three years to any sentence Felton would receive if he is convicted as charged, according to the prosecutor’s office. There were “numerous witnesses” to the Norris Drive shooting, the prosecutor’s office said.

Felton, convicted of burglary in 2012 and carrying concealed weapons in 2010, remains in the county jail on $100,000 bond.

He is to be arraigned Thursday.
