Crash closes Greene County road 11+ hours

UPDATE @ 9:34 p.m.: The section of Beaver Valley Road shut down because of a car that destroyed a utility pole will remain closed at least 3 more hours, but electric service should be restored in about an hour, said Dayton Power & Light spokesman Tom Tatham and a crew member at the scene.

That means the section of road — from Kemp Road, south to Fairground Road — will have been closed more than 11 hours since the Friday morning accident that sent the driver to Soin Medical Center suffering from a knee injury.

DP&L crews have been fighting scattered power outages all day because of the dampness resulting from soaking rains that have hit the region since Thursday and periods of windy conditions that hit parts of the area toward the latter part of the day, Tatham said.

A new pole had to be trucked out Beaver Valley Road and installed as well, he said.

Additional DP&L crews have been on duty because of the weather, Tatham said.

There were additional weather-related outages — 194 at 9 p.m. — in Montgomery County, in the areas of Woodman Drive and Woodbine Avenue, he said. Crews have been dispatched to those outages, which began being reported at 7 p.m.

FIRST REPORT

A section of Beaver Valley Road remains shut down nearly 9 hours after a car hit a utility pole, knocking it down.

At 8:10 p.m., the road remained closed from Kemp Road south to Fairground Road, according to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.

Dayton Power & Light crews arrived on scene about 7:15 p.m. to replace the pole.

According to the Ohio Highway Patrol trooper on scene this evening, the woman who was driving suffered a knee injury in the crash, which occurred about 11:30 a.m. when she lost control of her vehicle.

She was taken to Soin Medical Center.

The trooper said the weather — the continuing rain, some heavy at times, which has kept roadways slick — is considered a factor in the accident.

About 8:20 p.m., the DP&L online outage map shows 44 customers without electric service. Whether those outages can be attributed to the auto accident has not been made clear.
