Suspect’s attempt to steal car goes awry

A suspected car thief’s attempt to boost a car went wrong Monday night.

A woman who lives on Church Street started her car around 9 p.m., then carried a bag back inside her home. That’s when she heard someone driving the car away at a high rate of speed.

The woman’s brother followed in his own car until the thief crashed into six cars on Illinois Avenue. The brother chased the man through three yards before he caught up and punched the suspect in the nose and held him until police arrived.

Jason Poindexter, 19, was arrested and remains in Montgomery County jail, facing aggravated robbery charges in Tuesday’s afternoon docket.
