Butler County SWAT returns home from Baltimore

The six Butler County Regional SWAT team members sent by Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones to Baltimore earlier this week have returned home.

“Their last security detail ended last night around midnight,” Jones said in a press release today. “With the atmosphere being much calmer than previous nights, I made the decision to bring them home. They drove about half way home last night and then stopped at a hotel until sometime this morning.”

The team members left Tuesday as part of efforts to help restore order to the city, according to the sheriff’s office.

At this time, it’s unclear how much the trip cost local taxpayers.

Baltimore has been inundated with riots since Monday, following the funeral of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, who suffered a spinal injury while in police custody.

Baltimore’s top prosecutor announced criminal charges today against six officers involved, saying “no one is above the law.”

State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby declared that Freddie Gray’s death was a homicide, his arrest was illegal, and his treatment in custody amounted to murder and manslaughter.
