BUTLER TWP. – A 7-year-old girl has traveled more than 1,800 miles this week from Mexico to the Dayton region for a new prosthetic hand.
Miranda Guzman arrived Monday after her community and an American clinic in Mexico raised money to cover the prosthesis.
The family of a Huber Heights woman, who live and volunteer in La Mision full-time, arranged for Guzman to be treated at Optimus Prosthetics. The company is covering the costs of all appointments, fittings and services.
Guzman had her hand severed last fall after a horse-related accident.
Now, Guzman is excited to be able to hold things with both hands again, and to brush her hair.
Guzman tried her new hand on for the first time on Wednesday. Her mother, Kessia, described the day as very emotional. She thanked her community and the doctors at Optimus Prosthetics for their generosity.
Guzman will remain in the area for a few more days to make sure the prosthetic is properly working.
