Medical emergency leads to head-on collision in Dayton, police say

DAYTON — UPDATE @ 10:17 p.m. (Sept. 27): The head-on collision this afternoon on Wilmington Avenue, just south of Irving Avenue, was the result of a medical emergency suffered by one of the drivers, Dayton police said.

The driver of a pickup truck that crossed the center line and smashed into a sedan suffered either a seizure or a mild heart attack, one of the officers who was on scene said tonight. That driver was unconscious at the scene, the officer said.

The injuries to the truck driver, believed to be in his 60s, were believed to be non-life threatening, the officer said, and the injuries to the other driver were believed to be minor.

Medics have taken two men to Miami Valley Hospital following a crash in Dayton, according to police at the scene.

The two-car, head-on crash was reported around 5:55 p.m. in the area of Wilmington and Irving avenues.

A man who identified himself as the son of one the victims said his father suffered a heart attack. The father was driving a pickup truck. .

A medical condition is possibly the cause of the crash, according to police at the scene.

Police said they did not know the condition of the driver of the second vehicle, a sedan..
