Troy standoff suspect ordered not to use alcohol, firearms

A Troy standoff suspect, Stephen Steinle, pleaded not guilty to all charges in a Miami County courtroom. He was released on his own recognizance and ordered not to use any  alcohol or firearms while this case is pending.

Stephen Steinle, 67, has been identified as the man who initiated an hours long police standoff in Troy Friday night, according to WHIO's Steve Baker.

Steinle is held without bond in the Miami County Jail with an arraignment scheduled for Monday, according to Baker.

Steinle faces misdemeanor charges of inducing panic, aggravated menacing, and carrying a weapon while intoxicated.

He faces an additional felony charge for discharging his weapon prior to the standoff beginning.

A man who retreated to his apartment on Windridge Place in Troy after firing a gun several times is in custody.

Troy police Capt. Shawn McKinney said police received a 9-1-1 call just before 9:30 p.m. Friday about shots fired in an apartment, involving a man who apparently had been arguing with neighbors he had been drinking with.

"The neighbors heard the rounds being shot and earlier inthe night, the neighbors had seen him flash a gun at them," the captain said.

Two neighboring apartments were evacuated during the incident, the captain said. There was one more apartment in the building that was not evacuated.

A special tactical unit was deployed and used "some distraction devices" on the residence Police negotiators talked with him for three hours by phone. The man exited the apartment was taken into custody.

"I think alcohol was definitely a factor," McKinney said.

He said the man likely is to be charged with discharging a firearm in the city, inducing panic and possibly aggravated menacing.

UPDATE @ 12:04 a.m. (Sept. 9)

A standoff in the area of Windridge Place in Troy continued past midnight as police were trying to coax a man out of a home, where he has a gun he discharged several times Friday night during an apparent altercation.

A public information officer with the Troy Police Department said that according to the initial investigation, a man became involved in some kind of altercation with neighbors, went inside his residence and came out with a gun he fired several times.

Police are trying to determine whether the man fired at the neighbors or into the air in a fit of anger. The PIO also said alcohol may be a factor in the incident.

Sean Hagerty, in town for a weekend golf tournament, said he and a friend made a wrong turn following a high school football game in Troy and saw a man with a gun outside a residence in the area of Windridge Place.

Hagerty said the gentleman, dressed in street clothes, was on his knees with a pistol drawn, facing a residence.

Several police officers, with weapons drawn, arrived a short time later, Hagerty said.

A second person who said he lives on Mumford Drive, a block north of Windridge Place, told us he heard a "pop, pop, pop" he believes may have been gunfire.

INITIAL REPORT (Sept. 8)

Police are engaged in what appears to be a standoff on Windridge Place in Troy.

We're hearing that police have been trying to communicate with someone in a residence. According to Miami County dispatch, police were dispatched to the address on a "priority call."
