Victim in Shelby County crash near Port Jefferson is male, 17

PORT JEFFERSON, Shelby County — UPDATE @ 9:38 p.m.: Speed appears to have been a factor in the single-vehicle accident on Pence Road that sent a 17-year-old driver from Sidney to Miami Valley Hospital, suffering from serious injuries.

Nicholas Garrett was headed north on Pence, near Johnson Slagle Road, just before 3:30 p.m. when the green Dodge pickup he was driving slid off the right side of the road and hit a tree, according to a statement from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash remains under investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.

UPDATE @ 5:58 p.m.: A 17-year-old male has been taken to a hospital from the single-vehicle accident on Pence Road, a Shelby County sheriff's sergeant said.

The male was ferried by CareFlight and his condition is not immediately known, although the sergeant said the victim was conscious at the scene.

FIRST REPORT

A medic unit and Shelby County deputies have been dispatched to a single-vehicle accident in the 18,000 block of Pence Road.

The accident was dispatched about 3:45 p.m. and CareFlight has been dispatched to the address, which is east of Port Jefferson.

According to a sheriff’s dispatcher, the accident involves a vehicle that has slammed into a tree.
