Modified firework, thought to be grenade, detonated by bomb squad

Dayton police said a modified firework that was originally believed to be a grenade,prompted a response by the bomb squad and resulted in a controlled detonation.

Investigators said a passerby noticed a device in the intersection of Salem and West Hillcrest avenues that appeared to be a grenade.

The Dayton Bomb Squad responded to the scene and carried out a controlled explosion on the firework.

Dispatchers confirm the Dayton Police Bomb Squad is on the scene at Salem and West Hillcrest avenues after a grenade was found in the intersection.

Police have blocked off several roads around Salem and West Hillcrest, according to our crew on the scene.

Scanner traffic from the scene indicates nearby businesses are being evacuated.

We’re working to learn more about a large response of fire crews that were dispatched to the intersection of Salem and West Hillcrest avenues in Dayton.

According to scanner traffic from the scene, a grenade was found in the middle of the intersection.

Initial reports indicate the bomb squad has been requested to the intersection.
