Middletown man arrested in connection to Preble Co. shooting

CAMDEN — UPDATE @ 9:53 a.m. (Oct. 3)

A 49-year-old Middletown man is in the Preble County Jail after being arrested in connection to the shooting Friday near Camden.

William L. Cruze is in jail on preliminary charges of felonious assault, a second-degree felony, and having weapons under disability, a third-degree felony, according to a release from the Preble County Sheriff’s Office.

Due to the civil protection order that is in force, Cruze is prohibited from possessing a firearm or dangerous ordinance, according to the release.

Just after 6 p.m. Friday, deputies responded to the 1100 block of Swann Beatty Road after receiving a report of an altercation in the roadway that led to shots being fired.

Deputies arrived within minutes and found one of two men standing in the roadway, armed with a revolver. He was detained without incident. Deputies also located the second male, who was exiting a cornfield. He had been shot in the face and arms.

The preliminary investigation determined that the victim in the shooting, a 52-year-old male from Camden, had located a male subject driving in the area who was the subject of a civil protection order.

The protected person was a known acquaintance to both the victim and the male who was driving in the area. The shooting victim was following the male subject until both stopped their vehicles in the 1100 block of Swann Beatty Road. It was there that an altercation occurred and the victim was shot with one round from a .410 caliber revolver.

The victim was transported to Ft. Hamilton Hospital and later transferred to Kettering Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation will be sent to the Prosecutor’s Office for review today, according to the release.
