6 ejected, injured in Shelby County car vs. buggy crash

Six people, including four children, riding in a horse-drawn buggy were ejected and injured in a crash on Ohio 47 in Shelby County Thursday.

Deputies and medics from six Shelby County fire departments were dispatched to Ohio 47 just west of the Logan-Shelby County Line around 10:15 a.m. Thursday on a reported crash involving a car and buggy.

An initial investigation found a vehicle, operated by Nicholas Emerich, 31, of Bellefontaine was traveling east on Ohio 47 when he failed to see the buggy and crashed into the rear of it, Shelby County Sheriff John Lenhart said in a media release.

The force of the crash sent the buggy off to the right side of the road and ejected the six occupants of the buggy.

The buggy’s operator, Jacob Schwartz, 49, of Maplewood, his wife Rosa, and four children were all injured in the crash. The family was transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries.

One child was later transferred to Dayton Children’s Hospital with serious injuries.

The ages of the children ranged from 1-year-old to 9-years-old, Lenhart said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but deputies do not believe speed, alcohol, or distracted driving were factors.

UPDATE @ 4 p.m. (July 6)

Deputies in Shelby County said a buggy was rear-ended by a car on Ohio 47, injuring multiple people Thursday morning.

Six people were inside the buggy, but it was not known how many of them were injured or how bad their injuries were.

Multiple injuries have been reported in a crash between a car and buggy on Ohio 47 in Shelby County Thursday morning.

Crews were dispatched to the 22000 block of Ohio 47, near the Logan/Shelby county line around 10:30 a.m. on a reported crash with injuries.

Initial reports indicate at least five medic units have been requested to the scene for injuries sustained, but the conditions of those injured was not immediately available.

Dispatchers said a CareFlight medical helicopter was requested to the scene, but was unable to fly due to weather conditions.
