Local paramedics return after helping in Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts

Two Miami Valley paramedics are returning home after helping to provide medical care to those affected by Hurricane Harvey, according to the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS).

Alex Villanueva of Fairfield, and Marty Closey of Medway serve as members of an NDMS Disaster Medical Assistance Team, a federal program that provides medical care and mortuary assistance during disasters or public health emergencies.

“Hurricane Harvey has put people’s health and lives in jeopardy, and NDMS members are answering the call of duty to help residents affected by this disaster,” NDMS’ Acting Director Ron Miller said. “When a state requests our assistance, we will be there to serve until NDMS services are no longer needed.”

According to an NDMS release, Villanueva and Closey are among the many personnel who have provided care to more than 5,300 people affected by the storm.

NDMS operates under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, with teams consisting of physicians, nurses, veterinary staff, paramedics, fatality management professionals, and experienced command and control staff.
