Kaine to speak at Stivers School for the Arts in Dayton today

Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine will campaign in Dayton today.

The Virginia senator will speak at Stivers School for the Arts, 1313 E. Fifth St., at 2 p.m. Doors open at 12:30.

The event is open to the public and will take place in the school’s cafeteria, the school said in an email to parents.

“All teachers and administrators are public employees and are aware that they are not permitted to impose political views on their students,” Principal Erin Dooley said in the email. “However, we certainly know that students will be interested in the events occurring in their school and that there is educational value in having a firsthand experience in the presidential election process.”

The Dayton public school is a popular stop for candidates. Sen. Barack Obama campaigned at Stivers in July 2008 before winning the presidential election that year.

Monday’s visit comes as the race in Ohio continues to be close.

The most recent Quinnipiac University Poll released Thursday shows Republican nominees Donald Trump and Mike Pence defeating the Hillary Clinton/Kaine ticket in Ohio by four points, 41-37 percent.

Independent candidate Gary Johnson, nominated by the Libertarian Party, has 14 percent support, according to the poll. Green Party nominee Jill Stein is at 4 percent.

Kaine is the second vice presidential nominee to visit the area this election cycle. Pence, the governor Indiana, campaigned at the Mandalay Banquet Center in Moraine on Aug. 10.
