ODOT video shows man being hit while filling gas tank on I-75

UPDATE @ 10:12 a.m.:

Video obtained by a public records request from the Ohio Department of Transportation shows a man being hit by a vehicle while he filled up his gas tank Tuesday morning.

In the video, you see a vehicle strike the man and brake a short time later, before driving off.

UPDATE @ 2:20 a.m.

A man filling up his tank on an Interstate 75 ramp in Vandalia suffered a broken leg after a passing car hit him.

Sgt. Dallas Root of the Dayton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said the victim ran out of gas on the ramp from Northwoods Boulevard to Interstate 75 south before 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The man was partially standing in the roadway when another vehicle entering the highway from Northwoods Boulevard hit him.

The suspect vehicle continued on Interstate 75 without stopping after the crash.

The victim was transported to Grandview Hospital in Dayton for treatment of a broken leg and is listed in stable condition, Root said.

Investigators said the victim did not see the car before or after the crash. Root said an Ohio Department of Transportation camera, positioned on the highway, captured the incident but a description of the car was not yet available. Investigators are working to obtain additional footage from surveillance cameras of nearby businesses and other ODOT cameras to better identify the suspect vehicle.

Root said a lack of lighting on the ramp could be a factor in the crash.

State troopers and medics were dispatched to the Northwoods Boulevard exit of southbound Interstate 75 around 12:30 a.m. on reports of a crash involving a pedestrian.

Initial reports indicate the victim was on the shoulder of the road putting gas into his car when a vehicle, exiting the highway, hit them. Scanner traffic from Vandalia police indicates the vehicle involved did not stay at the scene after the crash.
