Firefighter injured; West Milton log style cabin home destroyed by fire

WEST MILTON — UPDATE @6:30 a.m. A firefighter was injured when he fell off a ladder while fighting a fire at a log cabin style home, officials said.

The firefighter, who hasn’t been identified, is expected to be okay and is being kept at a local hospital for observation.

Fire crews, mostly of whom are volunteers, have now been on scene for over six hours, and officials said crews are likely to remain on the scene into the afternoon.

The log cabin style home, which was built in 1983 and valued at $300,000, is considered a total loss. The home belonged to Jose Lopez, a well known attorney in Troy, officials said.

A wood burning stove may be the cause of the blaze. The state fire marshal’s office has been called to the scene to help investigate, officials said.

Due to the style of the house, there was no drywall and about 10 layers of insulation in the roof. This, combined with the house being on a hill, made the fire extremely difficult to fight, officials said.

Those inside the home and a dog did make it out, but a cat is missing.

UPDATE @ 4:09 a.m: Fire crews continue to battle a log cabin house fire more than four hours after first reports came in.

Crews responded to the fire in the 6000 block of Iddings Road just after midnight. Ludlow Falls was called for mutual aid.

As of 4:30 a.m., flames and heavy smoke continue to show from the cabin. The roof has caved in, and the home is considered a total loss.
