Tree down in Butler Township causes hundreds of outages

Dayton Power & Light is reporting 313 without power after a tree fell on wires in Butler Twp.

The tree fell in the area of Little York Road and Stoner Drive shortly before 4 a.m., according to reports.

The tree is off to the side of the road and is not blocking any lanes, but police have the roadway closed.

Power is expected to be restored by 7:30 a.m., according to DP&L.

Water main break in Dayton

UPDATE @ 2:55 a.m: No residents were affected after a water main break occurred on Free Pike at Brumbaugh Boulevard Thursday morning, according to city workers.

Crews were able to contain the water main break that was dispatched at 12:50 a.m. 

When crews arrived on scene, water was gushing from the road surface. 

The situation is now under control, and more crews from the water department will come to the scene later today to further assess the situation.

INITIAL REPORT

The water department has been requested to the scene of a water main break that occurred on Free Pike at Brumbaugh Boulevard early Thursday morning.

OTHER LOCAL NEWS: Wright-Patt training exercise sets off booms

The incident was dispatched around 12:50 a.m., per initial reports. 

No lanes are blocked as a result of the break and officials are on scene as well. 

We will continue to monitor the water main break and update this story with additional details.

DETAILED FORECAST

TODAY: A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect in the far north due to the possibility of light freezing rain. The best chance for freezing rain and slick roads are in Mercer, Auglaize, and Logan counties where temperatures will be close to 32 degrees. Even spots north of I-70, road sensors are showing temperatures in the upper 30s and low 40s, which limits potential icy roads. Drivers in the Winter Weather Advisory locations should still take their time and watch bridges, overpasses, and elevated surfaces where, if cold enough, could see some freezing rain. Dayton area and points south will deal with a wet morning drive with steady rain through the morning. Everyone should take it slow to prevent hydroplaning. Temperatures today will be cooler in the mid 40s with dry weather for the afternoon and evening hours.

FRIDAY: More rain pushes in Friday morning and will continue through most of the day. It will fall heavy at times, keeping the roads wet and the flood threat alive. Mild temperatures for the day with highs reaching around 60 degrees. They’ll be a lull in the rain at night. 

SATURDAY: The last day of widespread rain with scattered showers moving back in for the morning. Rain is expected to fall heavy at times for the afternoon and evening with thunderstorms and strong winds possible. Ponding on the roads and a flood threat to creeks, streams, and rivers will be possible as well. High peak around 60 degrees.

SUNDAY: A cold front will wipe through the area early Sunday, bring an end to the rain. Temperatures will remain pleasant in the low to mid 50s with sunshine late in the day.

UPDATE @ 1:45 p.m. 

A 15-year-old West Carrollton High School student who allegedly assaulted a classmate accused the assault victim of telling a female acquaintance to kill herself, according to a police report.

The 15-year-old victim denied the allegation while the victim filed the police report, according to the report. The victim’s mother also denied the allegation when reached by this new organization.

The victim and his mother went to the West Carrollton Police Department after the victim received treatment at Dayton Children’s Hospital on Feb. 5. The victim suffered a concussion and a jaw injury in the incident, the report said.

Mother speaks out after son attacked at West Carrollton HS

The victim also said the suspect reached out to him on Snapchat after the alleged assault, asking him not to pursue criminal charges, but the victim and his family did not have screenshots of the messages, the report said.

After completing the police report, officers went to the suspect’s home, arrested him and took him in for questioning. 

“(The suspect) told me that (the victim) told his friend to kill herself, which upset him,” West Carrollton officers logged in the report. “(The suspect) said that he has been going back and forth with (the victim) via text messages about it.” 

The suspect told police he has an anger problem, and it caused him to “black out” and attack the victim, according to the report. 

This news organization is not naming the parties involved in this incident because they are minors. 

FIRST REPORT

A West Carrollton High School student is facing assault charges after  the district said the student was allegedly involved in an assault at the school earlier this month that was filmed by someone at the school.

The assault was reported to have happened at the high school on Feb. 5

A parent shared a video with this news organization and on social media reportedly showing an attack in the hallway of the high school on the same day the district confirmed an assault occurred.  The district confirmed the video is part of their investigation.

LOCAL NEWS: 8-year-old found with a gun in his backpack at local elementary school

“This incident was investigated in accordance with school policies, and appropriate disciplinary actions were taken,” said West Carrollton Superintendent Andrea Townsend.  “Our District takes bullying very seriously, and is constantly teaching and reminding our students to be respectful of others in all their interactions.”
