Celina WWII veteran killed in Pearl Harbor attack laid to rest on Memorial Day

CELINA — A Celina veteran killed during the Pearl Harbor attack during World War II was laid to rest after his remains were identified several years ago.

Robert Edward Bailey, a U.S. Navy Third Class Petty Officer, was one of the casualties in the 1941 attack while serving on the USS Oklahoma, when 429 servicemen were killed.

His remains were identified in 2015 and just recently came home, Celina Mayor Jeff Hazel said.

He was laid to rest today in Swamp College Cemetery in Mercer County near his home, with full military honors.

Hazel declared today Robert E. Bailey Day in Celina.

The proclamation was read during Memorial Day services.
