Air pollution advisory extended through Wednesday

An air pollution advisory has been extended until Wednesday for Clark, Greene, Miami and Montgomery counties, according to the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission.

The advisory has been issued as air quality index readings are anticipated to be “unhealthy for sensitive groups.”

“Children, the elderly, and people with respiratory diseases should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion,” the commission said in a statement.

“It's OK to be active outside, but take more breaks and do less strenuous activities. Symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, or unusual fatigue may indicate a serious problem,” the commission said in the statement.

According to the commission, the air quality index is expected to be approximately 101 on Wednesday.  Any reading at 101 or higher is deemed unhealthy for sensitive groups.

The Storm Center 7 forecast of warmth (high temperatures), lots of sun, low humidity and southwest winds may lead to elevated air pollution levels and high levels of ground-level ozone.

The commission offers the following guidelines:

  • Carpool if possible
  • Refuel vehicle after 8 p.m. if possible
  • Combine errands or delay until advisory is lifted
  • Limit use of small gasoline powered equipment, such as lawn mowers
  • Mow lawn after 6 p.m.
