Dayton police to target speeders at certain intersections

The Dayton Police Department announces it will increase its enforcement of speed limits at some of the city's most dangerous intersections.

The enhanced enforcement will happen on Feb. 3, 10 and 24.

“Officers will be stationed at key intersections on North Main Street and Wayne Avenue for two- to four-hour periods on those dates,” said Cara Zinski-Neace, police information specialist, in a release.

Officers will be issuing citations with fines of $150 to speeders, as well as passing out information on the dangers of speeding and aggressive driving.

Zinski-Neace said the extra enforcement follows a 40 percent increase in vehicle crashes since 2014.

Over 1,000 injuries and 30 deaths resulted from crashes in 2016, according to the city.

Since July 2015, nine pedestrians in Dayton have been killed in traffic incidents where motorists ran a red light, according to the release.

The enforcement effort is part of the department's observance of Aggressive Driving Awareness Month, in cooperation with AAA.

"Speeding and aggressive driving are serious risks for the community, and unfortunately we have data to prove it," said Chief Richard Biehl in a release. "We are urging drivers to slow down and pay attention."
