Suspect in fatal shooting turns self in

The person shot and killed on Catherine Street in Springfield Wednesday night has been identified as Travis Feaster.

The alleged shooter, Preice Staten, turned himself in to Springfield Police just after noon Thursday.

Springfield Police confirm that the person of interest in the deadly shooting of Travis Feaster turned himself in to police headquarters just after noon Thursday.

Preice Staten was taken in to custody on a charge of murder.

Springfield police announced Preice Staten, 31, of Springfield, is a wanted suspect in Wednesday night’s fatal shooting of 34-year-old Travis Feaster.

Police said Feaster had gone to Staten’s home, where Feaster’s son lives, when an argument between the two men started.

The person shot and killed in what police said stemmed from a “family disagreement” has been identified as Travis M. Feaster, 34.

A person of interest in the shooting has not been detained, police said.

The victim from the shooting on Catherine Street has died and the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has the body, an investigator with that office said.

He said the coroner’s office would not release the victim’s name, pending notification of his family.

Police have identified the suspect in the shooting on Catherine Street and they are hoping he surrenders to tell his side of the incident that sent a man to a hospital suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, Springfield Police Chief Steve Moody said.

“There was some kind of physical disagreement,” the chief said in assessing the initial investigation into what happened in front of 227 Catherine St.

Police dispatched just after 8:30 p.m. found the victim down, in front of the address, Moody said. There was a crowd around as the first officer on scene administered aid to the victim, the chief said.

A second officer arrived to help the victim as well.

The shooter, a male, shot another male during a fight over family matters and fled on foot, Moody said. Police aren’t sure whether the shooter ran to a waiting vehicle.

There were children in the house and several adults outside where the shooting occurred. No one else was injured.

Moody said investigators are talking with the suspect’s family, “we’re urging him to come down and tell his side of the story.”

UPDATE @ 10:11 p.m. (Sept. 30)

We’re told that one victim has been taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center from the shooting at a residence in the 200 block of Catherine Street and the gunman fled on foot.

Springfield police tell us the shooting stems from an apparent domestic situation that started as an argument or disagreement between two men.

One of the men went to the residence and confronted a man who answered the door. The man who answered the door was shot once in the chest, police tell us.

We’re still working to learn more details. We’ll update this report as we get information.

FIRST REPORT (Sept. 30)

Police have been dispatched on a report of a shooting in the 200 block of Catherine Street, in the area of Clifton Avenue.

Crews were sent out about 8:40 p.m.

There is no information about the victim or the seriousness of the injury or injuries.

We’re told the suspect is believed to be a male said to be wearing a hoodie.

We will update this report as we get information.
