Man’s death inside Dayton apartment ruled homicide

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has ruled Leon Stanley Smith Jr.’s death a homicide with the cause being multiple gunshot wounds.

UPDATE @ 11:36 a.m. (Sept. 30):

The man found shot to death in a Xenia Avenue apartment in Dayton was identified as Leon Stanley Smith Jr., according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office. The cause and manner of Smith’s death has not yet been released.

UPDATE @ 2:10 a.m. (Sept. 29):

Dayton police said a shooting that resulted in the death of a man might be connected to drugs.

Investigators said a man was found dead inside an apartment in the 300 block of Xenia Avenue, suffering from a single gunshot wound.

Police said the cause and manor of the shooting remains under investigation, but “illicit drugs” appear to be involved.

The victim, who has still not been identified, pending family notification, was not a resident of the apartment, but was staying there.

Police said they are looking for one shooter, but there might be more people with the shooter.

A report of shots fired into a house that occurred a few blocks away, but near the time of the shooting, appears unrelated, police said.

No other details were available.

Dayton police said a man is dead after a shooting on Xenia Avenue Thursday night.

Investigators said the man was found shot at least once inside an apartment in the 300 block of Xenia Avenue.

The identity of the victim was not released, pending notification of family.

Homicide detectives are on the scene conducting interviews with neighbors and possible witnesses.

No suspect information was given.

FIRST REPORT

Dayton police and medics have been dispatched to a reported shooting on Xenia Avenue late Thursday night.

Crews were dispatched at 11:30 p.m. on reports of one person shot in the 300 block of Xenia Avenue.

Police scanner traffic indicates officers have taped off the entire block for the investigation.

Initial reports indicate a suspect vehicle speeding away might have been involved in a crash, but a location or crash scene has not been located.

Dayton police were also notified moments after the shooting of a reported shooting into a house near the intersection of Xenia and Linden Avenue, only a few blocks away. It was not immediately known if the two reports were related.
