Domestic violence suspect jailed after evading police in 3-hour manhunt

A man wanted by Englewood police and who evaded police last week during a three-hour manhunt, was arrested over the weekend.

Paul R. Matthews was wanted for felonious assault in Englewood. Sgt. Mike Lang with Englewood police said Matthews was picked up in Harrison Twp.

Butler Twp. police on Friday night also encountered Matthews on a bicycle. When they  tried to talk to Matthews, the man ran away and officers recognized him as the wanted Englewood suspect.

Matthews is in Montgomery County Jail now for domestic violence.

An Dayton man wanted for felony domestic violence was the subject of a three-hour manhunt on Friday that began in Englewood.

Police are still looking for 47-year-old Paul R. Matthews, who has a warrant for his arrest.

On Friday afternoon, Matthews left the Clarion Inn, 10 Rockridge Road, before police arrived following a domestic violence complaint there. Matthews fled in the area of Interstate 70 and Ohio 48, where he was believed to be in a field, Englewood police Sgt. Mike Lang said.

Police blocked the area for a search involving several jurisdictions, including an Ohio State Highway Patrol helicopter. The OSP aviation unit went back to Columbus by 6 p.m., according to the patrol’s Dayton Post.

Lang said Matthews must have fled before the perimeter was established.

In Englewood, Matthews would only face obstruction of justice charges, Lang said.

However, a warrant for his arrest was issued Oct. 15 following his indictment for felony domestic violence by a Montgomery County grand jury. The charge stems from an Oct. 6 incident in Dayton, online court records show.

He is not believed to be a threat to the community at large.
