Local events celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The city of Dayton is hosting a series of events that will acknowledge and celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s work and leadership during the Civil Rights Movement.

Below you’ll find several local events throughout the weekend and on Monday that celebrate his legacy.

MLK Interfaith Breakfast 

Reverend Howard McClearen-Lee will be leading the special commemoration event in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Date: Friday, Jan. 13

Time: 7:30 A.M.

Place: First Lutheran Church, 138 W. First St., Dayton

Cost: $37.50 per person or $300 per table

Martin Luther King Jr. March and Rally

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” A march will take place in downtown Dayton. The focus is to continue moving toward a more inclusive community, grounded in love and recognizing equality. The march will begin with a meeting and a circle of inclusion , a walk to The Dayton Convention Center on E. Fifth St., followed by a rally.

Date: Monday, Jan. 16

Time: March at 10 a.m.  Rally starts at 11 a.m.

Place: Meeting at 1323 W. Third St. (near Drew Health Center), walking to The Dayton Convention Center at 22 E. Fifth St., Dayton

Cost: Free

Public Health- Dayton & Montgomery County Violence Prevention Teen Day Celebration

Featuring the Movie "RACE" based on the true story of Jesse Owens, the legendary superstar whose quest to become the greatest track and field athlete in history thrusts him onto the world stage at the 1936 Olympics, where he faces off against Adolf Hitler's vision of Aryan supremacy. The program builds upon the beliefs of Dr. King and his use of non-violence and the struggle for equality for all races.

What: The Movie "RACE"

When: Monday, January 16, 11:15 A.M.-2:45 P.M.


Admission: FREE- open to the public up to first 250 people

MLK Celebration Banquet 

“Still Standing” will be the theme of this year’s honorable banquet with speaker Rev. Joan Brown-Campbell.

Date: Monday, Jan. 16

Time: 6 P.M.

Place: Dayton Convention Center, 22 E. Fifth St., Dayton

Cost: $75 per person, $600 per table

MLK Day at the Kettering Recreation Complex 

Kids ages 6-12 are invited to celebrate equality and the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with games, crafts, swimming and other activities.

Date: Monday, Jan. 16

Time: 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Place: Kettering Recreation Center, 2900 Glengarry Dr, Kettering

Cost: $45 for Kettering residents, 450 for nonresidents
