Perseid meteor shower: When and how to see it this summer

Mark your calendars for the weekend of August 11! The Perseid Meteor shower will be peaking, and it is typically one of the best of the year, according to Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Kirstie Zontini.

This end of the summer show is produced when the Earth moves through the debris field of the comet Swift-Tuttle. The debris enters our atmosphere and becomes meteors and even fireballs!

The night of August 11-12 and 12-13 will be the best times to get outside and look for the meteors. Sunday night into early Monday morning is slightly favored for the highest amount of meteors to be produced.

Hopefully the cloud forecast in the Miami Valley will cooperate that weekend to give you clear sky for the show.

But, one thing that is sure to cooperate is the moon!

This year the moon will be in a new moon the night of August 11, and a very thin waxing crescent moon the night of August 12. This means there will be little moonlight to dim any of the meteors. Even better, is the fact that both nights, the moon will set around 9:30 p.m. This means a moonless sky during the overnight!
