January ends on a snowy note

January didn’t feel much like January this year. The first few days of the new year were in the 50s and 60s with no snow in sight! We didn’t have measurable snowfall until January 22!

Once the snow started at the end of the month, it took two storms to take the Dayton International Airport above normal. On average, the city gets about eight inches of snow for January. Snow on Sunday, January 22, topped out at four inches. Another storm, the following Wednesday, put down five inches of snow. The last few days of the month produced a few more shots of light snow that brought the airport up to 10.4 inches.

La Nina winters can bring an active storm track to the Miami Valley. This winter and last winter we had most of our bigger snows at the end of January and through February. If we see a similar pattern to last year, we will continue to see snow through February!
