Fall is getting closer and days are getting shorter

A new season is almost here! In one month, on September 22, the autumnal equinox will occur signaling the start of fall. Meteorologically speaking, fall will begin September 1, because in the weather world seasons are based on the annual temperature cycle, according to Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Kirstie Zontini.

One big change you will notice heading into autumn is the rapid change in the amount of daylight we are receiving. After the summer solstice, the days have been getting shorter and from fall to winter the loss really kicks into high gear.

  1. From August 22-September 22 we will lose about 2 minutes and 30 seconds of daylight a day!
  2. By September 22, the sunset will be around 7:30 p.m.
  3. The length of the day will go from 13 hours and 27 minutes to 12 hours and 9 minutes in about a month.
  4. There is a change in our temperature trend as well, the average high temperature drops from August 22-September 22 by about 9 degrees!

Enjoy the extra hours of daylight after work and school while you can. By the start of winter, the sunset will be around 5:15 p.m.
