Dayton Uses Late Run to Beat George Mason

DAYTON — Playing shorthanded, the Dayton Flyers outscored the George Mason Patriots, 13-4, over the final four minutes to get their first Atlantic 10 victory of the season, 74-65, Saturday at the UD Arena. UD played without Rodney Chatman, Elijah Weaver and R.J. Blakney due to injuries. The Flyers improved to 5-2 overall, 1-1 in Atlantic 10 play.

Jalen Crutcher and Ibi Watson combined to score 11 of Dayton’s final 13 points. Crutcher led all scorers with a career-high 26 points while Ibi Watson added 16 and Mustaphar Amzil scored 15 points. Zimi Nwokeji came off the bench and added seven points.

Dayton led by as much as 18 points in the first half, 32-14, but George Mason cut the lead in half, 38-29, at halftime. The Patriots started the second half on a 15-3 run to take a 44-41 lead.

The Patriots led 58-53 with over seven minutes to play but UD got three pointers by Zimi Nwokeji and Mustapha Amzil to go ahead, 61-59, with 4:23 remaining. The game was tied at 63-63 with over two minutes when Ibi Watson scored to put the Flyers up for good, 65-63. Watson’s dunk with 39 seconds left helped end any hopes of a George Mason comeback.

Dayton’s next game will be Tuesday night at Fordham at Rose Hill Gymnasium in the Bronx, NY. Tip-off is at 6 pm, pre-game coverage begins at 5:30 pm on the home of the Flyers, 1290 and 95-7, WHIO. You can also listen to the game here at WHIO.com.
