Dayton pulls away in the second half to beat Duquesne

Crutcher and Watson help lead the Flyers to their seventh win

DAYTON — Coming off an overtime win at Davidson Friday night, the Dayton Flyers used a second half run to defeat the Duquesne Dukes, 72-63, Wednesday night at the UD Arena. Ibi Watson led UD with 19 points, including four three pointers while Jalen Crutcher added 18 points. The Flyer opened the second half on an 11-2 run to go up 44-36 and led by much as 18 points in the second half. Dayton improves to 7-3 overall, 3-2 in the Atlantic 10.

The Dukes jumped out to a 10-2 lead to start the game, thanks to Marcus Weathers who scored all ten points. Duquesne led by as much as nine, 16-7, but UD went on a 12-2 run to take their first lead of the game, 19-18. The Flyers led 33-31 with seven seconds left in the half but Ryan Murphy’s three gave the Dukes a 34-33 lead at halftime.

Ibi Watson opened the second half with a trey and Dayton never trailed again. Elijah Weaver buried a three-pointer to extend the lead to 44-36. The Dukes cut UD’s advantage to 44-40 but Weaver hit another three and Mustapha Amzil scored to increase it to 49-40. Ibi Watson made three free throws and Zimi Nwokeji’s trey expanded it to 55-40. Koby Brea’s jumper and two free throws by Nwokeji capped the Flyers’ 15-1 run as they lead, 59-41

Duquesne cut Dayton’s lead to as much as eight points but UD made five of six free throws to seal the game.
