Dayton Loses to VCU to end A-10 Tourney Run

RICHMOND, VA — For the third time this season, the Dayton Flyers lost to the VCU Rams. This time it was in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament Friday afternoon, 73-68, in Richmond, VA. The Rams advance to the A-10 semifinals.

VCU never trailed jumping out to an 11-1 lead to start the game. Bones Hyland led the Rams and all scorers with 30 points, 22 in the first half. He also grabbed 10 rebounds. UD committed 21 turnovers in the game and VCU scored 22 points of those turnovers. The Rams pushed the lead to as much as 19 points in the second half, 55-36, with 9:11 to play.

Jalen Crutcher led the Flyers with 21 points, including four treys. Jordy Tshimanga had a double-double, 10 points and 10 rebounds. Ibi Watson also added 10 points but shot 2-10 from the field. UD made it a two-possession game on several occasions but the Rams scored on the next possession.

Dayton falls to 14-9 overall.

VCU will play Davidson Saturday at 9 pm in the Atlantic 10 semifinals.

The winner of that game will play the winner of St. Bonaventure-Saint Louis in the Atlantic 10 Championship game March 14 at 1 pm at the UD Arena.
