Dayton Loses the A-10 Opener at Home to LaSalle

DAYTON — The Dayton Flyers began the Atlantic 10 season losing at home to the LaSalle Explorers Wednesday, 67-65. Clifton Moore hit the game winner with 2.5 seconds left. UD falls to 4-2 overall, 0-1 in Atlantic 10 play.

Mustapha Amzil started in his Flyer debut and led the team with 22 points and seven rebounds. Jalen Crutcher added 19 while Rodney Chatman added a team-high seven assists. Crutcher also dished out his 500th career assist in the game.

UD played without R.J. Blakney and Elijah Weaver due to injuries and Chase Johnson announced before the game he was leaving the basketball due to health reasons.

Dayton jumped out to a 14 point lead, 16-2, with 10:34 left in the first half but the Explorers cut the UD advantage to 30-25 at halftime. LaSalle jumped out to a 40-38 lead to start the second half but Jalen Crutcher scored six straight points to put the Flyers up, 46-40.

But LaSalle answered and led 60-54 with over eight minutes left. Crutcher’s three tied the game at 65-65 apiece with 1:16 to play. Dayton had a chance at the lead with 50 seconds left Amzil’s three got stuck on the side of the rum and the Explorers took over with 32 seconds left. After a timeout, Moore made a jumper giving LaSalle their first win over Dayton at the UD Arena since 1999.
