Ohio State-Miami: Buckeyes blast RedHawks to conclude nonconference play

COLUMBUS — The sixth-ranked Buckeyes were a little late to the party, but once they arrived, they dominated Miami University 76-5 on Saturday at Ohio Stadium.

Coach Ryan Day did not play his starters in the second half, but the Buckeyes kept scoring after taking a 49-5 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Freshman Garrett Wilson took a pass away from Miami cornerback Ja’don Rucker-Furlow in the end zone for a highlight-reel-worthy 38-yard touchdown catch from Chris Chugunov in the third quarter to make it 56-5.

Chugunov then found Marcus Crowley from seven yards out late in the third quarter, and Gunnar Hoak connected with Jameson Williams on a 61-yard catch-and-run early in the fourth quarter.

Freshman running back Steele Chambers capped the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run with 3:02 left.

Rucker-Furlow, a sophomore from Belmont, broke up a long pass in the first half and was credited with three tackles in his season debut.

With 2:40 left, the game was suspended and then called because of lightning in the area.

FIRST HALF RECAP

The RedHawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a safety and a short field goal only to see Ohio State rip off 49 straight points.

Justin Fields threw four touchdown passes and ran for another in the first half as the Buckeyes built their lead.

The defense also did its part, forcing three turnovers to set up Ohio State scores. Two of those were fumbles forced by Chase Young, who had a pair of sacks.

The other was a diving interception by Jeffrey Okudah.

Fields completed 14 of 21 passes for 223 yards in the first half and ran for 36 yards.

He hit eight different receivers, including three apiece to Binjimen Victor and Chris Olave.

Olave caught two touchdown passes, Victor had one and K.J. Hill caught the other.

Young had two of Ohio State’s 11 tackles for loss.

Baron Browning and Davon Hamilton also had a pair.
