DAYTON — University of Dayton freshman point guard Malachi Smith has been Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for his play this weekend in this year’s ESPN Events Invitational. He helped lead UD to wins over Miami, fourth-ranked Kansas and Belmont. Smith, from Bronx, NY, averaged 11.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 2.3 steals in those three wins for the Flyers and shot over 55 percent from the field (15 of 26) and made all three of his free attempts.
Smith was also named to the ESPN Events Invitational All-Tournament Team along with Flyer freshman Daron Holmes II.

He made both ends of a one-and-one against Belmont with 16 seconds remaining that proved to be the difference in Sunday’s championship game. Dayton has won Thanksgiving tournaments in Orlando twice, winning the 2011 Old Spice Classic and the 2021 ESPN Events Invitational. Smith is the first Flyer freshman to be named MVP of an in-season tournament since Roosevelt Chapman in 1980.
