Dayton wins their fourth straight routing Alabama State

DAYTON — The Dayton Flyers had no hangover after winning the ESPN Events Invitational over the weekend as they defeated Alabama State, 93-54, Wednesday night at the UD Arena.

UD held the Hornets to 35 percent shooting for game, 19-54 from the field. Kobe Elvis and Toumani Camara each scored 16 points to lead the Flyers. Malachi Smith had 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists while Mustapha Amzil had 11. R.J. Blakney, Koby Brea and Moulaye Sissoko each scored eight points. Dayton improves to 5-3 overall and has won four games in a row.

After falling behind 2-0, UD went on a 18-0 run that was capped by a three-pointer by Amzil. The Hornets got as close as 11 points, 30-19, after a three by Kenny Strawbridge. But that is as close as they got as the Flyers scored six straight points on baskets by Blakney, Holmes and Smith. Dayton led 36-23 at halftime.

R.J. Blakney scored five straight points to start the second to extend UD’s advantage to 41-23. Kobe Elvis’ trey expanded the lead to 49-25. Elvis scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half. Camara’s dunk increased it to 70-39 with 9:08 remaining. Kaleb Washington scored his first two points as a Flyer to give them their biggest lead of the game, 87-47.

Dayton’s next game will Saturday afternoon when they host Northern Illinois at the UD Arena. Pre-game coverage begins at 1 pm, tip-off is at 2 pm and Flyer Feedback is after the game live from Flannagan’s Pub on East Stewart on the home of the Flyers; 1290 and 95-7, WHIO.
