Dayton offers scholarship to son of former NBA star

The Dayton Flyers offered a scholarship to Jamal Mashburn Jr., a four-star recruit in the 2020 class, according to multiple reports Thursday.

Mashburn Jr.’s dad starred for the Kentucky Wildcats in the early 1990s and averaged 19.1 points per game in a 12-year NBA career.

Mashburn Jr., a 6-foot shooting guard, played for Gulliver Prep in Miami, Fla., the hometown of Dayton head coach Anthony Grant and assistant coach Darren Hertz, until transferring to Brewster Academy in New Hampshire for his junior season. Dayton offered a scholarship to Gulliver Prep forward Tony Sanders Jr., another 2020 recruit, last week.

Mashburn Jr. ranks 108th in the 2020 class, according to Rivals.com. Ohio State, Florida, Virginia, Wake Forest and Xavier are among the schools to offer Mashburn Jr. a scholarship.

Dayton has two scholarships open in 2019 after Jordan Davis and Frankie Policelli decided to transfer and will have two opening in 2020 with Trey Landers and Ryan Mikesell playing their final seasons.
