Dayton Loses to VCU for the Second Time this Season

DAYTON — In their second matchup of the season, the Dayton Flyers suffer a disappointing loss to the VCU Rams, 76-67, Tuesday night at the UD Arena. The Rams scored 29 points off 14 UD turnovers. Ibi Watson led the Flyers with 20 points while Jordy Tshimanga had a double-double, 16 points and 12 rebounds. Dayton falls to 11-6 overall, 7-5 in the Atlantic 10.

UD led by as much as eight points in the first half and had a 38-31 advantage with 4:55 left until halftime. But the Rams outscored the Flyers, 10-1, to end the first half, including two treys by Vince Williams.

UD trailed VCU, 68-67, with 4:41 remaining after a basket by Jalen Crutcher. The Flyers had a chance to take the lead but Tshimanga lost the basketball and Bones Hyland buried a three-pointer to extend the Rams’ advantage to 71-67. After another Dayton turnover, Hyland scored to expand it to 73-67. Vince Williams sealed the game with his fifth three of game with 40 seconds remaining. UD went scoreless over the final 4:41 of the game.

Dayton is back in action Saturday afternoon when they host Saint Joseph’s at the UD Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 pm, pre-game coverage starts at 1:30 pm on the home of the Flyers; 1290 and 95-7, WHIO. The game can also be heard here on WHIO.com.
