Dayton loses on the road at George Mason

Fairfax, VA — The Dayton Flyers struggled offensively against the George Mason Patriots and lost, 50-49, Saturday night at EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, VA.

Malachi Smith led UD 12 points but made only 5-17 shots and had three assists. Kobe Elvis and Koby Brea each scored 11 points but the team’s leading scorer DaRon Holmes was held to four points on three shots by the Patriots, he came into Saturday’s game averaging 11.6 points per game. The Flyers fall to 12-7 overall and 4-2 in the Atlantic 10.

Dayton trailed 25-24 at halftime and trailed George Mason, 41-37 with 10:42 remaining. Koby Brea made three foul shots to cut it to 41-40 and Smith’s steal and layup put UD ahead, 42-41, with 9:11 to play. Brea added two more free throws to increase it to 44-41 at the 8:41 mark. DeVon Cooper buried a three-pointer for the Patriots to tie it at 44-44.

D’Shawn Schwartz’s and Xavier Johnson scored to put George Mason ahead, 48-44. Kobe Elvis’ basket cut it to 48-46 with 1:24 to go, ending a nearly seven and half minute scoreless drought and a nearly eight minute stretch without a field goal. Josh Oduro made two foul shots with 40 seconds to play to put them ahead, 50-46.

Brea buried a three to get UD within one, 50-49. Johnson missed the front end of a one and one with six seconds left. Mustapha Amzil grabbed the rebound and missed a three-pointer as time expired.

Dayton will look to bounce back Tuesday night when they host Fordham at the UD Arena. Pre-game coverage begins at 6 pm, tip-off is at 7 pm and Flyer Feedback follows the game on the home of the Flyers; 1290 and 95-7, WHIO.
