Dayton loses in overtime at Morehead State

The Dayton Flyers came back trailing by as much as ten points on three different occasions against Morehead State Saturday afternoon but lost in overtime, 45-38, at Jayne Stadium in Morehead, KY. UD quarterback Jack Cook passed for 428 yards and two touchdowns, including two rushing scores but his last pass of the day was intercepted in the end zone. Mark Pappas threw for 481 yards and six scores for the Eagles. The Flyers fell to 2-2 overall, 1-1 in Pioneer Football League play.

The Eagles led, 17-7, late in the first half but Cook’s second rushing touchdown got Dayton to within three, 17-14. Morehead State was driving before halftime but Zach Rumpke’s intercepted Pappas’ pass and returned 60-yards for a touchdown to give UD a 21-17 halftime lead.

Both teams exchanged touchdowns to start the second half but Jeremiah Scott’s 46-yard touchdown reception reclaimed the lead for Morehead State, 31-28, after three quarters. B.J. Byrd caught his third touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 38-28 with over seven minutes remaining.

The Flyers responded with a 68-yard scoring drive, capped by a four-yard touchdown catch by Andrew Holderer to cut the deficit to 38-35. The Eagles went three and out on their next series and Sam Webster’s 38-yard field goal tied the score at 38-38 and sent the game into overtime.

Morehead State scored on the first play of overtime, a 25-yard touchdown pass from Pappas to Devonte Adams to take a 45-38 advantage. UD drove to the Eagle nine-yard line but Cook’s pass into the end zone was intercepted by Tyler Noble to end the game.
