Dayton Flyers freshman Frankie Policelli is transferring, he told the Dayton Daily News in a text message Tuesday.

Players can enter their names in the transfer portal and still decide to stay with their original school, but Policelli confirmed he is leaving the University of Dayton after one season.

Later Tuesday, Policelli made an official announcement on Twitter. He wrote, “I’d like to thank the University of Dayton, the Dayton community and the Dayton coaches for allowing me to come here and create meaningful relationships with you all. After some personal time, speaking to my family and evaluating everything, I have decided to transfer from the University. I wish everyone the best and again thank you for everything.”

A 6-foot-7 forward from Long Island Lutheran High School, Policelli saw limited minutes in 20 games. He averaged 0.9 points in 4.8 minutes per game. He scored a season-high eight points in 19 minutes against Fordham on Jan. 26. He did not appear in either postseason game against Saint Louis in the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament or Colorado in the NIT.

Policelli’s decision means Dayton has two scholarships open and 11 filled for the 2019-20 season. He’s the second Flyer to leave the program since the end of the season in March. Sophomore guard Jordan Davis transferred to Middle Tennessee State.

Policelli is the sixth Dayton player to transfer in the last two seasons. Sam Miller (Charleston), Xeyrius Williams (Akron), John Crosby (Delaware State) and Jordan Pierce (Odessa College) left the program in 2018.

Policelli signed with Dayton in April 2018. Dayton planned to redshirt him, but the season-ending injury suffered by Jhery Matos in the sixth game of the season forced Policelli into action. He made his season debut Nov. 30 against Mississippi State but never got consistent playing time and only saw double-figure minutes twice.
