DAYTON — The Dayton Flyers had one captain in coach Anthony Grant’s first season, and they will have three in his second.
Redshirt senior forward Josh Cunningham will serve as captain for the third straight season, Grant said Monday, and redshirt junior forward Ryan Mikesell and junior guard Trey Landers will be first-time captains.
Dayton opens the season at 7 p.m. Wednesday against North Florida at UD Arena.
“The team voted,” Grant said. “We had a nice breakdown. It was close between those three. As a staff, we decided to name all three. To be honest with you, all three lead in different ways. They complement each other really well. It just worked out this year that all three were named captains.”
Their leadership will be important for a team with nine players, four of whom have never played Division I college basketball.
“We’ve got a lot of youth, a lot of new guys,” Grant said. “When you talk about Josh, as a fifth-year senior, it’s his third year being a captain. Ryan is a guy, in a Dayton uniform, who’s our most experienced guy. Trey obviously stepped up, and his voice is something that was established last year and has continued on this year.”
