Dayton Flyers Lose in Double Overtime at Rhode Island

KINGSTON, RI — The Dayton Flyers lost in double overtime to the Rhode Island Rams, 91-89, at the Ryan Center in Kingston, RI. UD led by as much as 18 points, 58-40, with 9:44 to play in the second half. But URI outscored the Flyers, 29-11, to end regulation and force overtime. Dayton had a chance to win in the first overtime but Jalen Crutcher missed a three at the buzzer.

In the second overtime, Ishmael Laggert buried two three pointers as the Rams led, 85-83. Rhode Island led, 90-88, but Crutcher was fouled with three seconds remaining. He made the first toss but missed the second and Antwan Walker grabbed the miss. He made one of two free throws and Mustapha Amzil’s passed with picked off by Malik Martin to seal the game for URI.

Zimi Nwokeji scored a career-high 29 points for the Flyers on 9-10 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds. Jalen Crutcher added 22 while Ibi Watson had 16 points. Rodney Chatman return to action and scored seven points in 36 minutes in his first game since December 30th. UD went only five of 26 from three-point range and shot 24-37 from the foul line. The Flyers fall to 11-7 overall, 7-6 in the Atlantic 10.

Dayton’s next scheduled game is Friday when they host Saint Louis at the UD Arena. It will be the Flyers’ Senior Night. Tip-off is at 7 pm, pre-game coverage starts at 6:30 pm on the home of the Flyers; 1290 and 95-7, WHIO. You can also hear the game online here on WHIO.com.
