Dayton defeats Duquesne on the road Saturday afternoon

Pittsburgh, PA — The Dayton Flyers put together a solid performance on the road Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Duquesne Dukes, 72-52, at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.

UD shot 53 percent from the floor and had 19 assists on their 31 made field goals, including seven assists from Malachi Smith. Daron Holmes II led the Flyers with a career-high 18 points while Kobe Elvis added a career-best 16 points, ten in the first half, making all four of his three-point attempts. The Flyers have now won three games in a row, improving to 11-6 overall and 3-1 in the Atlantic 10.

Both teams exchanged baskets to start the game as it was tied at 7-7 three minutes into the game. A pair of dunks by Holmes put Dayton ahead, 11-7, and two three-pointers by Kobe Elvis extended it to 17-10. Mustapha Amzil buried a trey to push it 29-16 but a pair of Duquesne baskets cut it to 29-20 with over five minutes to play. UD answered on Elvis’ jumper and a three by Koby Brea to go up, 34-22. Holmes’ alley oop before the first half ended gave the Flyers a 40-28 halftime lead. Dayton made just under 55 percent of their shots in the opening half.

Holmes opened the second half with six points as Dayton built a 51-32 lead. UD led by as much as 25 points, 64-39, on layups by R.J. Blakney and Moulaye Sissoko. Elvis’ trey capped with 3:36 to play capped the Flyers’ afternoon. Dayton shot 51 percent in the second half.
