Dayton Flyers defeat Rhode Island to advance in Atlantic 10 tournament

Flyer freshmen combine for 39 points

RICHMOND, VA. — The Dayton Flyers advanced to the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament defeating the Rhode Island Rams, 84-72, Thursday afternoon. Ibi Watson led UD with 25 points, 14 in the first half. Watson also made six treys. Jalen Crutcher and Mustapha Amzil each added 14 points. The Flyers improved to 14-8 overall and will play VCU in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 tomorrow afternoon at the Siegel Center in Richmond, VA.

Dayton’s freshmen combined to score 39 points. Along with Amzil’s 14 points, Zimi Nwokeji had nine points while Koby Brea and R.J. Blakney each added eight points. Brea also grabbed six rebounds.

Allen Bertrand’s three-pointer cut Dayton’s advantage to 56-55 with 11:15 remaining. Zimi Nwokeji’s three-point play extended it to 59-55 and Jordy Tshimanga followed with a basket to go ahead, 61-55. Freshman Koby Brea’s trey increased it to 64-55. The Flyers never looked back.

The Flyers will play the VCU Rams in the A-10 quarterfinals tomorrow afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 pm, pre-game coverage starts at 3 pm on the home of the Flyers; 1290 and 95-7, WHIO. You can also hear the game online here on WHIO.com.
