Dayton beats Drake on the road

DES MOINES, IA — The Dayton Flyers went on the road to Des Moines, Iowa and knocked off the Drake Bulldogs, 28-10, at Drake Stadium Saturday afternoon. Jake Chisholm ran for 144 yards and two touchdowns. He did most of his damage in the second half, 112 yards after halftime, including 71 in the fourth quarter. UD’s defense held the Bulldogs to 3-13 on third down conversions and one of six on fourth downs. The Flyers improved to 3-2 overall, 2-1 in Pioneer Football League play.

Dayton’s first points came in the second quarter when the ball over the head of Drake punter, Shane Drunning and Ca’ron Coleman ran four-yards for a touchdown to go ahead, 7-0. UD’s defense stopped the Bulldogs on fourth down and the Flyer offense made them pay. Jack Cook capped a ten play, 62-yard scoring drive, with a five-yard touchdown run to give the Dayton Flyers a 14-0 halftime lead.

On UD’s first possession of the second half, they began at their own four-yard line. They converted on third and fourth down to keep the drive alive and Joey Swanson’s 26-yard catch gave Dayton a first and goal from the Bulldog eight-yard line. Two plays later, Jake Chisholm’s four-yard touchdown run capped a 96-yard scoring drive to increase the Flyer advantage to 21-0 after three quarters.

The Bulldogs got a field goal and touchdown to start the fourth quarter to cut Dayton’s lead to 21-10 with 9:28 left. UD recovered the onside at Drake’s 46-yard line. Chisholm sealed the game with a 10-yard touchdown run.
