— The winless Cincinnati Bengals benched longtime starting quarterback Andy Dalton on Tuesday ... on his birthday.
Dalton, who turned 32, will be replaced by rookie Ryan Finley when the Bengals (0-8) return to the field after their bye week to face the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, Nov. 10.
Here’s a sampling of the reaction on social media:
Taylor talked to Dalton this morning, said it wasn’t an easy decision. Doesn’t blame Dalton for the team’s 0-8 start but said they’ve got to figure out what they’ve got with Ryan Finley. #Bengals— Laurel Pfahler (@LaurelPfahler) October 29, 2019
I'd say that one way to undermine a QB's trade value is by benching him hours before the trade deadline, but that would assume the people running the Bengals even know that today is the trade deadline.— Mo Egger (@MoEgger1530) October 29, 2019

Andy Dalton, who threw for 329 yards and a touchdown without any turnovers against the Rams on Sunday, turns 32 years old today. Not the happiest of birthdays. If the Bengals are done with him, maybe they can do him a favor and trade him before today’s deadline.— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) October 29, 2019

Andy Dalton: Thanks, coach!

I’m telling you all, this 0-8 season isn’t on the shoulders of Andy Dalton.— Philip Lee (@PhilipRLee) October 29, 2019
Andy Dalton was and is an extremely nice and positive person, and I liked to watch him for the majority of my time as a Bengals fan. And although the Dalton era came to a surprising end today, I will say that I appreciated what he did for us. @andydalton14— Jack Neumeyer (@JN_Cincinnati) October 29, 2019
Andy Dalton's time in Cincy is up, which is needed....But the timing of all this is ridiculous. You bench him now?? If they were done with him then they NEEDED to traded him in the off season. I'm fairly certain the Brown family circus isn't even aware there's a trade deadline...— Kyle Veatch (@Veatch63) October 29, 2019
Andy Dalton is all class on and off the field. He is a first-rate person who achieved some very good results (team and individual) on the field over the last 9 season. This is a results-based business, though, and his time was clearly up. Thanks, Andy.— Andre Perrotta (@andreperrotta13) October 29, 2019
