Piada hosted its first-ever Taste Tour to launch the new menu last week. We dropped in to the Dayton stop at Speakeasy Yoga on 510 E 3rd St. in downtown Dayton to sample some of the new dishes.

Slow roasted Porchetta, a cut of premium pork with Tuscan spices – porcini, rosemary, garlic and pepper. Layered on a rustic Italian roll with basil aioli, pickled red onion & fennel. Served with Rosemary Parmesan Kettle Chips.

Quinoa + Beet: Red quinoa, beets and za’atar spice.

Meadowlark owner’s new sandwich shop plans off the table — for now

ScissorTail Sandwich Shop could open as early as June.

A group of Dayton-area restaurateurs have shelved their plans to open a new sandwich shop in a Kettering strip mall.

Elizabeth Wiley and her partners had planned to open their newest venture, ScissorTail Sandwich Shop, at 3141 Far Hills Ave. (Ohio 48), a space they leased in Fountain Square shopping center for Sagecraft Catering & Events

The catering company is phasing down.

Wiley said the shopping center was recently sold and the new owner wanted to increase the lease amount.

“(The new owner) decided that our lease didn’t specifically say that we could use it for (a sandwich shop). We were told that we would have to have a new lease, which would mean more money,” Wiley said. “I didn’t feel I could spend anymore money for a place where I could have (about a dozen) seats and have limited space for prosperity.”

Heather Murphy, the vice president of Fountain Square owner Miami Valley Commercial Group, said her attorney plans to file a lawsuit against Wiley and her partners for default.

She said she was not at liberty to say how long Wiley’s group defaulted on their lease or in what way.

Murphy said claims Wiley made to this news organization misrepresented facts. 

“They never supplied plans. They never supplied anything,” she said.  

Murphy said Miami Valley Commercial Group purchased the shopping center in late March and plans to rename and update it.

“This is going to be a very exciting time,” she said. 

Wiley said an early drawing was provided to Miami Valley Commercial Group. The project never got to the point where architectural drawings were done, she said. 

Wiley said she and her partners moved out of the building and stopped making payments on the advice of their attorney.

Her attorney will be in discussion with the attorney representing Miami Valley Commercial, Wiley said.  

“We fully understand our obligations as a tenant and will fulfill these obligations,” Wiley said.

Wiley, the owner of Wheat Penny Oven and Bar in the Oregon District and Meadowlark Restaurant in Washington Twp., said she and her partners are disappointed that the plan has fallen through.

They had planned to make their own bread and were working on sandwich recipes. 

“We are now going to look for a new space with more space,” she said. “A cool little funky sandwiches shop would have been so much fun.” 

She hopes to find a space for the new business between Kettering and downtown Dayton.

The small but mighty restaurant in Columbus serving authentic Nepalese and Tibetan cuisine has once again been recognized for their crave-able food. On Monday, Yelp published their “2018 Top Places To Eat In The Midwest” list, and Momo Ghar was at the top of Ohio’s list.

Owners of Momo and husband and wife Pramod Lama and Phuntso D Phin only opened the restaurant in May of 2016. It was such an instant success that Guy Fieri of “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” came to the state’s capital earlier this year to see if his well-traveled palate would be just as impressed.

When the show aired, Fieri was visibly blown away by the flavor packed into each dumpling. What might be just as good as the dumplings themselves, Fieri said, is the homemade sauce served with each order.

The restaurant’s sauce — which is what “brings everything together” — is made by Phin with no outside help to ensure it’s up to her standards each and every time.

Dayton.com made the short drive to Columbus this weekend and ordered a generous serving of the Vegetable Dumplings. We have concluded Guy Fieri and Yelp were right on the money. The warm, gooey dough soaked up the perfect amount of sauce for each bite. The cabbage with seasonal vegetables filling was an unexpected lighter dumpling experience than what typical dumplings deliver. 

Momo Ghar exceeded our expectations, and we can confidently say they are on the “Top Places To Eat In The Midwest” list for good reasons. 

Other Ohio restaurants on the list included Guerra’s Krazy Taco in Springfield, Fond: Lunch and Deli in Cincinnati and Mi Burrito Mexican Grill in West Chester.

This Cincinnati gem’s Riverside location is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. The Hickory smoked ribs and hickory smoked turkey breast are tender and meaty and the pulled pork is infused with garlic, cayenne and sugar rub that will bring a smile to your face. Add some sides like jalapeño cheddar grits, jalapeño cornbread, dirty baked beans and you’ll really be cookin’. The record player serenading with wonderful scratchy classics from the past is a nice bonus.
