VIDEOS: Tornadoes hit the Miami Valley over the years | Severe Weather Awareness

March 17-23 marks Severe Weather Awareness Week this year, which is the perfect time to look back on the past to help prepare for the future.

The Miami Valley is no stranger to severe weather, tornadoes in particular.

1. For many in the area, the first that comes to mind when they hear the word has to be the Xenia Tornado of 1974

The twister was part of a “Super Outbreak” which documented 148 tornadoes in 13 states. The deadliest of the outbreak, the Xenia Tornado was an F5, and killed 33 people while injuring 1,300 others.

2. Far more recently, in May 2015a tornado caused significant damage to the Greene Towne Center in Beavercreek.

The E-1 tornado injured two people, and damaged dozens of cars and a number of businesses and real estate.

Eyewitnesses quickly reported seeing the touchdown, which can be seen very clearly in the video above.

3. On a busy day in March 2016, a total of five tornadoes struck the Miami Valley within the same 24 hours.

The communities affected stretched across Montgomery, Darke, Preble, and Miami counties.

Plenty of other tornadoes have ripped through the Miami Valley in recent years as well, proving the need for severe weather awareness and safety.
