Torri’ell Norwood, 16, got a certificate Feb. 19 at school for her ability to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, an emergency lifesaving procedure for when the heart stops beating, WTSP reported.

Norwood was driving with three other people including her friend A’zarria Simmons when they were involved in a car crash.

“I see a car like coming very, very fast,” Simmons said. “We got hit. We had crashed into a tree.”

Norwood and two others were able to escape from the car after the impact. Simmons was unconscious in the back seat of the car with a deep cut on her head. Norwood raced back. She pulled Simmons from the vehicle. She felt for a pulse and, not feeling one, started to perform life saving techniques.

They were the same skills she had learned just 24 hours earlier.

“I just saw my friend on the ground and knew what I had to do,” Norwood told WTSP.

Norwood gave Simmons 30 compressions and two breaths to save her life. Simmons is recovering and is expected to return to school next week, WFLA reported.

“I just feel like if it wasn’t for her, I would have passed,” Simmons said.

Norwood’s teacher, Erika Miller, is proud of her pupil.

“To know that she took something she learned in class and applied it and was able to help save her best friend’s life is what every teacher hopes that they learn in class is how they can use this in the real world,” Miller said.
