Steelers-Titans game postponed until later in season after more Tennessee players test positive for COVID-19

The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Tennessee Titans will not face off Sunday as planned after multiple players and team personnel tested positive for COVID-19.

Update 9:40 a.m. EDT Oct. 1: Officials with the NFL said in a statement Thursday that the Steelers-Titans game will be pushed to later in the season after at least one more Titans player and one more personnel member tested positive for COVID-19.

League officials had previously said the game would be pushed to either Monday or Tuesday.

“The decision to postpone the game was made to ensure the health and safety of players, coaches and game day personnel,” NFL officials said.

Original report: Four players and five staff members with the Titans tested positive for the coronavirus, CNN reported.

The NFL released a statement Wednesday morning.

“The Steelers-Titans game, originally scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. ET, will be rescheduled to allow additional time for further daily COVID-19 testing and to ensure the health and safety of players, coaches and game day personnel. Details on the new game date and time on either Monday or Tuesday will be announced as soon as possible.”

The Titans announced Tuesday defensive lineman DaQuan Jones, long snapper Beau Brinkley and practice squad tight end Tommy Hudson were added to the team’s “Reserve/COVID-19 list.”

The list includes players who test positive for COVID-19 or who have been in close contact with an infected person.

It’s unclear who the fourth player is that tested positive for the virus.

Until Wednesday, the NFL was planning to have the game go on as scheduled, Pittsburgh-based WPXI reported.

The NFL said Tuesday the Titans would temporarily suspend all in-person club activities.

In a letter Tuesday to team executives and presidents, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the situation is “not unexpected.”

“There will be players and staff who will test positive during the season,” he wrote, in part.
