Video of the race shows Logan High runner Gracie Laney nearing the finish line during the 4X200 meter relay at the school as the dog, carrying its leash, chases her down the final 100 meters, KSL reported.

“At first, I thought it was another runner and I was surprised because we had a pretty good lead,” Laney said. “As it got closer, I thought, ‘That’s too small to be a person,’ and then I noticed it was a dog.”

She nearly tripped over the dog at the finish line but was able to maintain her footing and finish the race.

“When the dog crossed in my lane, I was afraid that I was going to trip over it, and then I was worried that I was going to spike it with my spikes,” she said. “It all happened so fast.”

Logan High won the heat with a time of 1 minute, 59.27 seconds.

As for the enigmatic pup?

Her owners have apologized. Owner Kate Heywood, a student at Murray High School, was warming up for her race when Holly got loose from her parents, KSL reported. Heywood said Holly loves to run and took off when she saw the baton.

Holly completed about 100 meters of the race in 10.5 seconds, about 1 second slower than Usain Bolt’s world record set in 2009, according to World Athletics.

Laney said there are no hard feelings but she would like a picture with Holly and later commented on the video.

“Lol I can’t believe I got beat by a dog,” she said.
