The law, passed during a special session, bans any “unlawful restraint” of a dog, banning both chains and heavy weights, the Texas Tribune reported.

The law also requires that any animal outdoors have “adequate shelter,” which includes shade from direct sunlight and drinking water, KSAT reported.

Texas Governor Greg Abbot signed the bill into law in October after vetoing a previous version over the summer, People Magazine reported.
